The event was staged by REK (Robot Entertainment Kombat), a San Francisco robot-fighting startup founded by VR developer Cix Liv. The human is combat-sports comedy creator Frankie LaPenna. The robot is an EngineAI T800, built in Shenzhen and reported to cost around $100,000. The important part: REK's robots are not autonomous — a human pilot drives each one remotely with a VR headset or controller, and the only AI on board keeps the robot balanced. And "first ever" is REK's own billing: a Unitree robot kickboxed a boxer in April 2025, and this same T800 model kicked its own company's CEO to the floor in December 2025.
