Grey-crowned crane: preening feathers 👑

The grey crowned crane (Balearica regulorum) is a bird of the true crane family, native to eastern and southern Africa. Out of the six crane species on the African continent, the grey crowned crane is considered the most numerous. However, this doesn't stop it from being unique among its peers: out of all the cranes in the world, only crowned cranes can sleep in trees, thanks to their hind toe. Other crane species do not enjoy this privilege and are forced to sleep on the ground, in dangerous proximity to predators. The scarlet patch on its throat is a folding musical wind instrument. Also unique: when they inflate this gular pouch, low, booming sounds resonate for miles. Did they perhaps take music lessons in Tuva?
