Ukraine’s Ethnic Groups by Population | 1926–2026 Explore 100 years of demographic change in Ukraine through an animated bar chart race showing the population of major ethnic and national groups from 1926 to 2026. This visualization follows Ukrainians, Russians, Crimean Tatars, Moldovans, Bulgarians, Belarusians, Hungarians, Poles, Armenians, Greeks, Jews, Tatars, Roma, Azerbaijanis, Georgians, Germans, Gagauz and other communities that have formed Ukraine’s diverse population. Ukraine’s ethnic composition changed dramatically throughout the 20th and early 21st centuries. Major influences included changing state borders, the Holodomor and other demographic losses of the 1930s, World War II, the Holocaust, population transfers and deportations, Soviet-era migration, the 1944 deportation of the Crimean Tatars, their large-scale return beginning in the late Soviet period, Ukrainian independence in 1991, emigration, declining birth rates and the large-scale displacement caused by the war since 2022. Historical census benchmarks include the Soviet censuses of 1926, 1939, 1959, 1970, 1979 and 1989, as well as Ukraine’s 2001 national population census. For example, the 2001 census recorded a permanent population of about 48.24 million and representatives of more than 130 nationalities and ethnic groups. Український перепис 2001 Special care is required when comparing the earliest years because Ukraine’s borders changed substantially. The 1926 Ukrainian SSR did not include all territories that are part of internationally recognized modern Ukraine. Crimea, for example, was then part of the Crimean ASSR; the 1926 census recorded 179,094 Crimean Tatars there. Международный Суд The annual values between census years are reconstructed using interpolation and demographic modeling. Figures after the 2001 census should not be interpreted as official annual ethnicity census counts. The 2022–2026 period is especially uncertain because of war, international migration, internal displacement and the absence of a recent nationwide ethnicity census. Ukraine’s overall population has also declined substantially during the full-scale war. UNFPA reported an estimated decline from about 42 million in January 2022 to 35.8 million in July 2024, while UNHCR reported 5.9 million refugees from Ukraine abroad by the end of 2025. UNFPA EECA This video is intended as a demographic and historical visualization. Estimates may differ between sources because ethnicity, nationality, residence and territorial coverage are measured differently.
