Don Quixote: Short Libretto Act I: The Plaza in Barcelona The spirited Kitri is in love with the charismatic barber Basilio. However, her father, Lorenzo, wants her to marry the wealthy, foppish nobleman Gamache. Amidst the town’s festivities, the eccentric knight Don Quixote arrives on his quest for "Dulcinea" and mistakes Kitri for his ideal lady. Under the cover of a lively dance, Kitri and Basilio run away together. Act II: The Gypsy Camp & The Dream The lovers take refuge in a gypsy camp near a field of windmills. Don Quixote, ever delusional, attacks a windmill thinking it’s a giant. After being knocked unconscious, he has a beautiful Dream where he is surrounded by Dryads and sees Kitri as his Queen, Dulcinea. Act III: The Tavern & The Wedding Lorenzo finds the lovers and tries to force Kitri to marry Gamache. Basilio fakes his own death in a comedic "suicide" plot. Kitri begs Don Quixote to intervene, and the knight forces Lorenzo to bless the "dying" man’s union. Basilio "miraculously" recovers, and the ballet concludes with a grand festival—the famous Grand Pas de Deux—celebrating the wedding of Kitri and Basilio.
