We look under the microscope. = Entomologist, biologist Dr Viktor Nikolayevich Fursov talks about wasps of the Pompilid family - Pompilidae (Hymenoptera) - and how Pompil wasps prey on spiders and shows a living Wasp-Pompilid under a microscope in a Petri dish found on asphalt in the city of Kiev, Ukraine. ====== Дорожные осы или помпилиды (Pompilidae, или Psammocharidae) — семейство перепончатокрылых насекомых (Hymenoptera) подотряда стебельчатобрюхие (Apocrita). Преимущественно крупной или средней величины насекомые (15—40 мм). Ведут одиночный образ жизни. Роют норки в земле (некоторые в древесине или лепят из глины), куда откладывают яйца на парализованных уколами жала пауков, служащих кормом для личинок. Некоторые виды (Ceropales, Irenangelus, Evagetes, Nipponodipogon) ведут клептопаразитический образ жизни и используют добычу, заготовленную другими дорожными осами. Обитают по всему земному шару. В мировой фауне около 4900 видов, в Палеарктике 650 видов, в России около 200 видов, особенно многочисленны в тропиках; для бывшего СССР указывалось около 285 видов, наиболее разнообразны в Закавказье и Средней Азии. 35 родов в Северной Америке, более 40 родов в Австралии. ==== Wasps in the family Pompilidae are commonly called spider wasps, spider-hunting wasps or pompilid wasps. The family is cosmopolitan, with some 5,000 species in six subfamilies. Nearly all species are solitary (with the exception of some group-nesting Ageniellini), and most capture and paralyze prey, though members of the subfamily Ceropalinae are kleptoparasites of other pompilids, or ectoparasitoids of living spiders. Adult pompilids are nectar-feeding insects and feed on a variety of plants. Depending on genus and species, pompilids capture a variety of spiders for their larvae to feed on, covering nearly all free-living spider families, including tarantulas, wolf spiders (Lycosidae), huntsman spiders (Sparassidae), jumping spiders (Salticidae) (and baboon spiders (Harpactirinae). A female Pompilidae wasp searches the ground and/or vegetation for a spider, and upon finding one, stings it, paralyzing the spider. Once the spider is paralyzed, a female pompilid makes a burrow or flies or drags the spider to a previously made burrow.
