The Free Territory of Ukraine was a short lived anarchist territory in southern, central, and eastern Ukraine from 1919-1921. Headed by Nestor Makhno (pictured in the video above), they interchangeably fought the White Army and the Bolsheviks, and sabatoged Tsarist supply lines going to the north (effectively being the biggest help in letting the Bolsheviks win the battle of Moscow during the Russian Civil War). In 1921, to solidify control over Ukraine, Leon Trotsky headed the Red Army to strike deep into the Free Territory. They fought to the last second, but when they lost Nestor Makhno and 70 of his most trusted men crossed the border into Romania, and Makhno then went to Paris, where he died in 1934. As for the Free Territory, it was absolutely ravaged by Trotsky, who had authorized the use of terror tactics against the Free Territory. Villages burned and civilians died, with the Black Army (the army of the Free Territory), defending them.
