When your dog hates other dogs

I wish I could say this wasn't based on my own experiences but for some reason my otherwise docile poodlexshitzu goes absolutely bonkers if I even tug just slightly on the leash when approaching other dogs. He is immediately staunched, ready to take on the biggest Great Dane if needed. It's never needed. Ever.
