Over a wide river, A belt is a bridge overstretched, The town is small, mentioned by the Chronicler more than once. I know, in this town — Human life is real, Like a boat on a river, The outgoing one leads to the goal. Striped pillars At the guardhouse, where the soldiers are Under the shrill wail of the trumpet They're marching like sleepwalkers. In the bazaar, all the people, Men, gypsies, and passersby, They're buying and selling, They're preaching the Word of God. In the well-built houses, The white and modest housewives are waiting, Wearing colorful Samarkand scarves, But their eyes are still dark. The governor's palace Is ablaze with light in the evening, The leader's stallion is The wonder of the whole province. And in the spring, they go in secret, To the cemetery, the girls with their sweethearts, Whispering, caressing: "My prince of jacinth!" And they kiss over the graves. The cross is raised above the church, The symbol of clear, fatherly power, And the crimson chime rings out With wise, human speech.
