Researchers of different disciplines contributed to this course, so you will learn how interdisciplinary research is done, involving philosophers (Giacomo Andreoletti, Louis Vervoort), a computer scientist (Aleksey Lysenko), and an economist (Alexander Usvitskiy). A key research thesis that will be explored in this course is that consciousness is strongly related to cognition and rationality. Louis Vervoort will place the topic of this course in its general context, and study the following questions: which theories of consciousness exist? what is the conceptual link between consciousness, cognition, rationality? which lines of research are promising? Louis Vervoort is a philosopher who formerly received a degree in physics. He is originally from Belgium. He studied physics at the Aix-Marseille University (France) and the École Normale Supérieure in Paris (France). Louis received his PhD in Philosophy from the University of Montreal (Canada) in 2013. In 2014-2015, he was a postdoc in History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Quebec in Montreal (Canada). The SAS BA program offers a world-class education: professors from 13 countries, the majority of whom received their PhDs from universities ranked in the top 100 in the world (according to THE and QS World University Rankings); seven majors, including sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities, guided by best practices at the world-class universities; delayed choice of a major at the end of the second year; highly engaging study experience: 80 % of classes are smaller than 20 students; freedom to study: electives constitute 30 % of the curriculum.
