Part 1. City of the Gods He knew it all... Damn Lovecraft knew it all! But... how? We found a city, like a madman's final cry, Twisted and broken, turned inward to decay. Its sight awoke emotions none could justify, As though a frozen howl had swept the soul away. How did it rise from out a snow-entombed abyss? How many deathless ages has it stood alone? Its walls reached up beneath a bleak and lightless sky. Had it borne witness to the deathless gods unknown? As if on another world, Where the frozen fissures spread. Through the black mist at first light, Not a trace where paths once led. We pitched our camp beside the walls in restless doubt, With drills and tents, the radar scanning through the cold. We searched each frozen inch with scientific zeal, Until we found a nightmare older than the world. It slept entombed since ages of the Miocene, A shard of frozen silence, lifeless, pale and pure. A find whose worth no measure ever could contain. Our joy was real, untouched by vanity or lure. As if on another world, Where the frozen fissures spread. Through the black mist at first light, Not a trace where paths once led. By night some slimy presence presses through our dreams, By night our skulls are split with cracks of throbbing pain. The sense of unseen eyes melts reason from the mind, While long-forgotten words strip flesh away again. Now burning with a fever, now consumed by frost, The joints all twist with agony beyond control. The shadows, whispered voices, countless watching eyes Awake forgotten memories buried in the soul. As if on another world, Where the frozen fissures spread. Through the black mist at first light, Not a trace where paths once led. Outside a beastly roaring shakes the frozen waste, Black blood is splashed across the unforgiving snow. The screams... the gunfire... now the ancient thing has woken. Within this risen nightmare there is nowhere left to go. Its claws are tearing through us, hunting in the dark, A blurred abomination sweeping through the camp. Yet driven back at last beneath relentless fire. It bleeds... and for the first time, hope is not a sham. With broken, frantic leaps it flees into the night, But close behind we follow every desperate stride. Then suddenly it melts into the solid wall... A hidden gate awakens, opening inside. As if on another world, Beyond the threshold's shade, Standing now for all we've learned, Time stands still... tick... tock...
