This is incredibly rare 1973 G-1 flight jacket that belonged to USN VFC-13 pilot.At the time of its creation VFC-13 had only 17 active pilots, but they were one of the best and most professional naval fighter pilots because squadron role was the imitation of a potential enemy - the Soviet Air Force. US Naval Aviation Command considered Soviet pilots skills as very high also the Russians were considered as the strongest and most serious enemy. That's why squadron's patch copying the style of the USSR flight emblems and has the motto Saint Adversary. The squadron's pilots carefully studied the combat tactics of Soviet pilots, VFC-13 planes copied the paint schemes and liverys of the Soviet fighters, had Soviet marks and tactical tailnumbers of USSR Air Force. The task was to imitate a potential enemy in close air combat training and dogfighting with the USN pilots and Marine Corps pilots. In the mid-70s, the squadron was relocated to Miramar, where it served as the main opponent of pilots of the famous Top Gun school. The red Soviet flag with the CCCP inscription was borrowed from photos of Soviet cosmonauts and was usually used on the Soviet space suits of that period. Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club patch indicates that the jacket owner took part in the Vietnam war, probably as F-8 Crusader pilot - these pilots formed the first recruitment to VFC-13 in 1973 and Crusaders that were the first fighters of the squadron. The patch with Thomas the Cat on the sleeve also refers to the Vietnam period.
