GAME AND QUIZ: http://www.ruskyed.com/PLANTS/index.html RuskyED here and this lesson is about a family of flowering plants which you are almost certainly aware of, but before we get to that, take a look at the vocabulary list while the intro song plays! [SONG/VOCAB] When it comes to the Amaryllis Family (or Семья Амариллис in Russian) things get a little complicated. There are several tribes and sub-tribes, but we only need to concern ourselves with those included in the Red Book or Красная Книга in Russian, which includes only the following list of members of the Amaryllis Family: Подснежник альпийский or Galanthus alpinus Подснежник борткевича or Galanthus bortkewitschianus Подснежник эльвеза or Galanthus elwesii Подснежник лагодехский or Galanthus lagodechianus Белоцветник летний or Leucojum aestivum Белоцветник весенний or Leucojum vernum Нарцисс узколистный or Narcissus angustifolius Панкраций морской or Pancratium maritimum Штернбергия безвременникоцветная or Sternbergia colchiciflora Унгерния спиральная or Ungernia spiralis - - - AND - - - Унгерния виктора or Ungernia victoris As you undoubtedly noticed, four members of the Galanthus genus were included in this list. Members of this genus are commonly referred to as snowdrop plants although the name in Greek would be something more like milk flower. Either way, Подснежники ядовиты. (Snowdrop plants are poisonous.) In fact, they contain a toxin abbreviated as GNA. Interestingly, a scientist by the name of Arpad Pusztai created transgenic potatoes which expressed the protein from snowdrops so that GNA was present in potatoes. Этот эксперимент вызвал очень много споров. (This experiment caused a lot of controversy.) Moving on, two members of the genus known as Leucojum appear on this list and they have the common name snowflower and the Russian name Белоцветник translates to white flower. Other common names include snowbell, dewdrop, and St. Agnes’ flower. It should be noted that, Луковицы подснежника токсичны для домашних животных. (Snowdrop bulbs are toxic to pets.) Also on the list is a member of the Narcissus genus. Common names for members of this genus include daffodil, narcissus, and jonquil. Interestingly, Нарциссы могут подавлять рост других растений. (Daffodils can inhibit the growth of other plants.) However, Действует не все растения. (Not all plants are affected.) - - - AND - - - Нарциссы грызуны не едят. (Rodents do not eat daffodils.) Also included in this list is a member of the Pancratium genus, also known as sea daffodils; a member of the Sternbergia genus which is similar to crocus flowers; and two members of the Ungernia genus…. and…. Известно, что семена трудно прорастают. (The seeds are known to be difficult to germinate.) Having covered all that information it is time for a joke! What do you call daffodil bulbs on sale for half price? And the answer is: A daffo-deal. As you might expect this joke does not translate into Russian, but the question part translates as, Как вы называете луковицы нарциссов, которые продаются за полцены? The punchline, however, is problematic. Сделка is the Russian word for deal or bargain, and while the last syllable of daffodil sounds like deal, the last syllable of нарцисс doesn’t sound at all like сделка and so we’re out of luck with this pun, but that’s the way it is with puns most of the time and so no surprise. And with that being said, it is now time for this lesson to come to its conclusion. Rusky Ed signing off…. VOCAB морской (maritime) спиральный (spiral) вызывать (to cause) спор (controversy) домашние (domestic) подавлять (to inhibit) действовать (to affect) грызун (rodent) прорастать (to germinate) полцены (half price) продавать (to sell) сделка (bargain) Амариллисовые (Amaryllidaceae) pages 25 - 32 В марте, в берлогах просыпаются медведи и начинают сажать подснежники… In March, bears wake up in dens and start planting snowdrops…
